Chinook Helicopter’s Have Finally Arrived in India

Indian government cleared the purchase of new attack and heavy lift helicopters from the US in July 2018. Indian government did $2.5 billion deal with US for a new fleet of 15 Chinook. The government had finalised the contract for IAF’s 22 Apaches and 15 Chinooks in September 2015.

Here is the first image of the Indian Air Force’s first CH-47F Chinook heavy-lift helicopter arriving at the Mundra port in Gujarat this morning.

The delivery took place at a merchant vessel today the delivery of helicopter is weeks ahead of schedule, the first Chinook was to arrive by March this year. 14 more chinooks will come to India by this year.

These Chinook helicopters will be commissioned at Chandigarh Air Force base where it will become part of the 126 Helicopter Flight, a unit that operates the last of the IAF’s Mi-26 helicopters.

Some Details about Chinook helicopters

Chinook helicopters are the most lethal attack helicopter in the world. The version that India is purchasing is the latest Block III configuration that the US first got in 2011.

The stealthy, versatile chopper is designed for all kinds of missions. Equipped with laser and infrared systems for a weather, day-night operability.

The iconic twin rotor chopper is a battle proven machine that has flown countless missions into war zones from Vietnam to Afghanistan and Iraq.

The massive helicopter can carry 9.6 tons of cargo, including heavy machinery, artillery guns and even light armoured vehicles to high altitude. Suited for mountain operations, the Chinook is highly maneuverable and can get in and out of tight valleys. Its missions range from ferrying troops to disaster relief operations.

The Chinook was originally designed by Vertol, which had begun work in 1957 on a new tandem-rotor helicopter, designated as the Vertol Model 107 or V-107.

Chinook have been used in Vietnam War, Iran, Libyan Wars, Falklands War, Afghanistan and Iraq wars and in various disaster relief and other roles.
